WONDERFUL WASTE

Word Notes (Part - 1)

 

waste: (noun) materials that are no longer needed and are thrown away.

Sentence - My mother threw all the wastes from my house.

survey: (verb) to investigate / to examine

Sentence - I surveyed myself in the mirror before going out.

dish (noun) food prepared in a particular way as part of a meal

Sentence 1. - Mother, what is the main dish today?  

feast (noun) a large or special meal

Sentence - All my family members will go on a wedding feast tomorrow.

scraps (noun) a small piece of something (synonym – bit)

Sentence - He gave the scraps to the dog.

cook (noun): a person who cooks food or whose job is cooking

Sentence - There is a cook in our house.

pointing: (verb) - present participle) aiming, showing with finger

Sentence - My father asked me pointing to the display board.

reply: (verb) to say or write something as an answer to somebody

Sentence - He never replied to any of my letters.

bit: (noun) small amount, a little

Sentence - I asked him to give me a bit of salt.

command: (verb) synonym – order, to tell somebody to do something

Sentence 1 -  ‘Come here’! He commanded them. 


Word Notes (Part - 2)

sternly: strictly

Sentence - The police commanded sternly to the culprits to tell the truth.

in a fix: (idiom) a difficult situation (synonym – mess)/ a situation hard to escape from

Sentence - My friend was in a fix in the ground because he had to score 18 runs from one over.

stare: (verb) – to look at somebody/something for a long time

Sentence - My class teacher stared at me in the class room.

flash across the mind (phrase) – suddenly think of

Sentence - An idea flashed across my father’s mind.

vegetable bits - (small pieces of vegetables)

strips (noun) – long narrow piece

Sentence – My mother cut the lady’s finger into long strips.

ground (verb, past tense of the word grind) broke or crushed something into very smaller pieces/particles)

Sentence 1 - The floor is ground using traditional method.

Sentence 2 - My mother ground ginger, garlic and green chillies together to make a good dish.

tempting: (adjective) – something that is attractive and makes people to have it.

Sentence - That cake looks very tempting.

whipped: stirred (mixed)

Sentence - My sister whipped some curd with rice.

lo and behold! (idiom) – look! What a surprise

This idiom is used for calling attention to a surprising or annoying thing

Sentence - As soon as we went out, lo and behold, it began to rain.

traditional (adjective) – older methods and ideas that have not changed for a long time (synonym – conventional)

Sentence - Avial is a traditional feast in Kerala.
