What is Phrasal Verb?

Answer: Prepositions may combine with verbs to form a type of compound verbs. This verb + preposition is known as phrasal verbs. Phrasal verb has a new meaning most of the times.

The prepositional form used with the verb may be referred to as an adverb. This is called prepositional adverb or particle. (particle is the more general term)

Example: Sayapatri and Sukumar looked at each other.    

The child looked up the word in the dictionary. 

Some common phrasal verb, its meaning and uses in the sentence.

look after = take care of

She has looked after her elderly parents for many years.

look for = try to find

I am looking for a new house.

put off = postpone

Don't put off today's work for tomorrow.

make out = understand

His writing is always difficult to make out.

get over = overcome

He got over his difficulties.
