VOCABULARY AND DRILLING:

 shrill whistle - 

shrill - adj. - very high and loud, in an unpleasant way

shot out - v. - moved suddenly or quickly in one direction 

snorting - v. - making a loud sound by breathing air out noisily through your nose especially to show that you are angry or amused.

showering - n. - the act of washing yourself with a shower, a large number of things that arrive or fall together

damp and sticky - 

damp - slightly wet, often in a way that is unpleasant.

glare - to look at sb/sth in an angry way

flash - a sudden bright light

nap - a short sleep, especially during the day

lit  - past form of light

cot - a small bed with high sides

emerge - to come out of a dark, confined or hidden place

yawn - v. - to open your mouth wide and breathe in deeply through it, usually because you are tired or bored

My brother suddenly stood up, stretched and yawned. 

snoring - breathing noisily through your nose and mouth while you are asleep

twilight - the faint light, the period of the time at the end of the day

nightlife - entertainment that is available in the evening and at night

tonk-tonk - sound of a particular bird i.e Coppersmith barbet/nightjar

creakings - v. - creaking sounds that a door sometimes make or wooden floor on which one steps on it.

as though - as if

He behaved as if nothing had happened.

It sounds as though you had a good time.

padded footfall - 

footfall - the sound of the steps made by sb walking

He heard her familiar, light  footfall in the hall.

rustle - sounds of paper, leaves etc.

peering - looking closely or carefully at sth

humming - singing a tune with your lips closed

She was humming softly to herself.

distinctly - clearly heard, seen, felt

sawing sound - a sound produced while movement backward and forward of saw

scare away - to make sb go away by frightening them

They managed to scare the moneys away.

crouching - putting your body close to the ground by bending your legs under you.

He crouched down beside her.

terrifying - making sb feel extremely frightened

swiftly - quickly and immediately

She moved swiftly to the rescue.

hum - to sing a tune with your lips closed

tremor - a slight shaking movement, a small earthquake in which the ground shakes slightly.

rumble - to make a long deep sound or series of sounds

thundering past - roared

Heavy trucks kept thundering past.

scribbling - writing sth quickly and carelessly, especially because you do not have much time

beat out - p.v - to produce a rhythm by hitting sth many times.

strained - v. - injured part of your body by making it work too hard.

let out - to come to an end, so that it is time for people to leave

The movie has just let out.

firefly - a flying insect with a tail that shines in the dark
