Classification of sentences

A sentence can be classified according to its structure.

1. Simple (Finite clause)

2.Multiple sentence two types: (Compound and Complex)

2. Compound

3. Complex

4. Compound Complex sentences

SIMPLE SENTENCE:

💨If a sentence contains just one clause (one finite clause) is described as simple sentence.

💨The term 'finite clause ' means a clause which contains a finite or free verb.

💨A finite verb stands by itself  in a clause.

💨A simple sentence has only one finite verb.

💨It may have more than one subject or object or complement, but it has only one finite verb.

Example;

Ria and Saloni presented a report.

There are a number of stars as big as the sun.

Those boys did not attend my class.

John and Michael are friends.

COMPOUND SENTENCE:

💨A sentence made up of two or more principal or main clauses (called co-ordinate clauses) is called a compound sentence.

💨It may contain one or more subordinate clause in addition to the co-ordinate clauses.

💨Each of the clauses in such sentences conveys a complete meaning and can stand on its own. So these clauses are called main or principal clauses.

💨It can be easily divided into two or more parts and both the parts will be equally important.

Examples:

Mahatma Gandhi started many movements and got India free from the British.

Mohan jumped four meters and so did I.

It is difficult to agree with all the recommendations of the Kelkar committee, for it hits the middle class most and also it does not help the economic growth by any means. ( This sentence has three co-ordinate clauses.) 

COMPLEX SENTENCE:

💨The sentences in which there is one main clause and one or more than one subordinate clauses are there, is called a Complex Sentence.

💨A Subordinate Clause is joined to the Principal Clause by a Subordinating Conjunction.

💨It can not be split into two or more parts. 

Examples

1.There are a number of stars which are as big as the sun.

2.Those are the boys, who did not attend my class.

3.When I was coming back from the office, I saw an elephant.

COMPOUND COMPLEX SENTENCE:

💨It contains two or more co-ordinate Clauses and at least one sub-ordinate clause.

Examples

1.My son had deep faith in me but he never told it to me and I always thought that he was wrong.

My son had deep faith in me- Principal Clause

but he never told it to me-       Principal Clause

and I always thought-              another Principal Clause

that he was wrong-                  Subordinate Noun Clause
